Chapter Six

A hot shower, a couple of aspirin, and a few shots of Jameson later, I barely cared about my foot. Who needed feet anyway? Not this girl. Luke had carefully iced, set, and wrapped my foot, which was now comfortably propped on the arm of the couch. The searing pain had dwindled down to more of an uncomfortable throbbing.

I rested my head in Luke’s lap as we watched television to pass the time before we were supposed to meet up with his contact, the ever mysterious Frank, to purchase guns, ammunition, and an assortment of other things Luke insisted we absolutely needed. He wanted to go alone, but I was not having it. It was my revenge mission, not his, and I was not going to have Luke do all the dirty work for me.

The time slipped by us, and we got dressed. I had no choice but to wear a tacky pair of house shoes that Luke had picked up from the store. Any other shoe was too tight to fit my wrappings in. With Luke’s help, we got to the car he had rented us and headed to the outskirts of town to meet Frank at the storage lot where he kept his surplus supplies. The lot was dingy and poorly lit, the dim orange glow casting deep shadows around the buildings.

“I need you to be behaved,” Luke warned me as we pulled in. “Just… don’t be rude. Frank is a good friend of mine from way, way back, but he’s kind of uh, weird. Harsh personality. He’s seen some shit.”

“We’ve all seen some shit.”

“That! That right there!” Luke pointed at me. “No sass, okay? Don’t say anything if you don’t think you can be anything but completely polite and nice.”

“You sound like my mother,” I muttered, crossing my arms and turning to look back out the window.

“You really can’t even help it, can you?” Luke asked. “I think you might be physically incapable of not talking back.”

Fine, I’d keep my mouth shut. That would show him, right?

We parked outside of the locker where Frank was supposed to meet us. We were only a couple of minutes early, but I had still expected him to be there before us to make sure he had everything we were buying set aside.

“He’s a professional, Kayla. He probably set it up right after I called him.”

“Right,” I answered. “And he’s professionally late as of right now. I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

Luke groaned and turned on the radio. Something felt patently not right, but I figured it was probably a mix of pain and whiskey throwing off my instincts. And I knew from the few sentences Luke had spoken about Frank directly that he had a lot of admiration and respect for him. There would be no convincing him to bail before we picked up the goods.

Ten minutes later, a beat down truck rolled into the parking lot and idled next to our car. Luke nodded his head upwards to greet Frank before turning to me.
